SPM English 1119 Writing (Paper 2)
The SPM English Writing paper is assessed using a holistic marking system. Students are evaluated based on four key areas: content, communicative achievement, organisation and language. Each component carries equal weight, giving a total of 60 marks.
Paper 2 Comprises three parts:
Part 1:
Short Communicative Message (80 words, 20 marks).
Part 2:
Guided Writing (125-150 words, 20 marks).
Part 3:
Extended Writing (200-250 words, 20 marks - Article, Report, Review, or Story).
Writing Marking Band Overview
The marking uses a "band" approach, typically assigning marks based on holistic quality:
Band A (Excellent):
Precise vocabulary, varied sentence structures, very few grammar errors, excellent task fulfillment, and logical coherence.
Band B (Good):
Generally accurate language, good range of vocabulary, coherent, and good task completion.
Band C (Passable):
Some errors but meaning is clear, acceptable range of vocabulary, simple structures.
Band D (Unsatisfactory):
Serious grammar errors, limited vocabulary, poor organization, weak task completion.
Band E (Poor):
Frequent, severe errors, very few accurate sentences, barely understandable.
Key Performance Indicators
Content:
Directly answers all bullet points in the prompt.
Communicative Achievement:
Uses the correct format (e.g., formal report, informal email) and tone.
Organization:
Uses paragraphs effectively, with good linking words.
Language:
Range of vocabulary and grammatical accuracy.
